Hi Malcolm,
We sailed from St. Lucia to Grenada in April. We attempted to sail back but the wind direction (north north east) meant a big tack to the west ( the cat doesn't point as well as a monohull.) Instead we jumped ship and flew back while the cat continued south and then west to Venezuela.
Yes the winds are stronger in December (the Christmas trades) and you'll be sailing into the winds (25+ knots) so it'll be quite the ride but three weeks should be enough time if you have the experience to sail her on overnight passages into the prevailing winds in open seas. I would recommend waiting until the spring/summer when the winds should diminish and clock easterly.
Why not buy the boat, let her sit and wait until you are retired?

Hi George,
Thank you for the advice! My wife and I have bareboated twice between St.
Lucia and Grenada, although that was in July, we loved it, including some
rather challenging pieces (for us) going north between Grenada and
Cariacou(sp?) and St. Vincent and St. Lucia. You are correct though we have
only been sailing for 5 years, most of that on Lake Ontario, so we are
relative rookies.
I understand at Christmas the winds can be somewhat stronger, as well as
more out of the North East as opposed to the East or South-East in July. It
might well be a better idea to wait until next May and go all the way from
Trinidad to New York, with a skipper for the portion between the Northern
Caribbean and Bermuda/New York.
Our plans are jello depending on what is the best/safest for us.
Where do you store your boat in Trinidad and how has your experience been?
Regards,
Malcolm

by hiring a skipper to help you go north means you might be short on
experience. The windwards can be demanding sailing at that time of year for
man & wife on new boat. And what is the rush? You'll be leaving great
sailing grounds and Trinidad is probably best of all islands for boat work.
I think Peakes and Power Boats are first rate yards. Coral Cove is also ok
and they are beyond the boat dropping mentioned in one response. We live
aboard half of the year and store our boat for the other half in Trinidad. I
would be glad to share any information you might want on Trinidad.
