    Sorry to perpetuate this but by sheer coincidence I'm reading a technical
    article about the electronic chip that will be embedded in the back page of
    passports, .and the associated details
    To summarize
    The chip cannot be accessed unless the passport is open.
    The electronic range is 4 inches maximum.
    There are two electronic keys needed to access it - on is the access key and
    the other is the encryption/decryption key since all data is encrypted.
    Before the chip can be accessed, an optical reader has first to read some
    bar codes printed inside the passport and from this data it can compute the
    electronic passwords to access the chip.
    The chip stores all the printed information normally in the passport
    including the picture ID, visas, entry and exit records.

    So no need for the tin foil.
