Someone mentioned that there is a charger that will recharge many different
sizes of rechargeable batteries? Does anyone know what this unit might be?
Is there a unit that works directly off DC rather than having to use an
inverter?
If you have to use an inverter, what is the smallest inverter that would run
the unit?
Thanks for any info

We bought a unit at Home Depot that came with a bunch of NiMH cells. It
handles AA and AAA sizes. Look for a unit with a wall transformer that outputs 12
VDC so you can chop the wire off of it and hook the charger directly up to
the ship's 12 volt supply.
Avoid the type that plugs directly into the wall.
Before you cut the wires check that one of them has some sort of marking. If
they don't then just cut one side of the pair and then tie a knot in the two
cut ends before cutting the other conductor. Alternatelyh you could mark one
of the wires with something like nail polish before cutting them. Then plug
the wall transformer in use a voltmeter to determine which wire is positive. Be
carefull not to let the ends of the two wires touch each other. As a policy
I tie an overhand knot on the positive wires. Then hook up the wires to the
charger to your boat observing polarity.
We have done this and it has worked great for years. Jan uses the batteries
in her digital camera, CD music player and cordless mouse.
