The latest version of CAP'N can use vector charts(!!!) I have not tried it
with the NOAA vector charts, though.

NOAA used to have free raster downloads some years
ago, but I haven't been able to find them on the NOAA
site for several years now.

What NOAA now has for free now is VECTOR charts, which
require special software, and which may not yet cover
as many areas as the existing raster charts.

There are some good vector chart programs out there,
but nothing yet approaching some of the neat features
of The Cap'n, IMO.

But vector is fairly new, and new software is being
developed all the time.

Personally, I think some of the raster chart features,
like the 3-D rendering, might be worth the extra $$ to
buy the charts for now, but I don't have much
experience actually sailing with any of them.
