This doesn't make sense. If a CD gets scratched it can be polished (Disk Dr I think) and if something spills on them they can be washed. If there is something that collects you can was it off. The laser does not burn the surface, it burns the inner layers.

Melinda,
I jumped into this kinda late so I'm not sure whether anyone
mentioned or not but the biggest drawback to any form of disk
type media is the constant potential of moisture getting into
the tiny little (mostly invisible to the naked eye) crevices
on the cut edges of the disks (both inside and out). Now I
know this sounds like I'm an alarmist but I have a whole bunch
of them to prove my point. I'm in the audio/video duplication
and production industry so when this little pearl of wisdom
snuck up on me it was especially painful. What happens is
ANYWHERE there was the tiniest hint of raggedness in the cut,
that's where the moisture inclusion began and eventually,
well it's kind of like finding out you had a loose thru-hull
bolt right above where your sheets and towels were stored,
say maybe a month or so later :-)
At first I thought it was only happening on the crappy (oops,
I mean "industrial grade") media I use at work but it eventually
invaded even the good stuff (Adobe, Microsoft, the works).
When it does get in (sooner or later) mold will form and when
enough of that accumulates it blocks the laser's ability to
see the data underneath.
Bottom line, keep the little devils in some sort of "foolproof"
container and be especially careful when transferring them from
one temperature extreme to another (humidity).
Hope that makes sense,
David
