The Garmin accepts anything anything from 4V to 12 V. I currently have it
wired directly to the 12v boat supply through its cradle (connected by the
same type of plug that's on the data cable). However, I will check the
voltage and pin arrangement before I connect anything to the GPS via the new
cable. Two of the six pins on the data cable are for power and ground.
Interestly, the GPS in my car is powered from the serial port (a Delorme
unit). Serial ports can put out 5V at 5 mA; while that might be adequate
for the antenna, it probably is not sufficient to power the display on the
Garmin unit.
The Garmin AC adaptor is $41, not $14 (I must be dyslexic).
