    My engine is the Volvo Penta MD 17 (1980), and the transmission is a Volvo,
    MS Reverse gear. It is almost, basically part of the engine. (when I removed
    it, almost half the engine oil spilled out) It is not a hydraulic unit. The
    piece I am talking about is like a clutch. A double ended cone slips back
    and forth into a sleeve inside a gear, there are two sleevesand gears, one
    for each end of the cone, one is forward and the other reverse. When the
    cone is in the middle, its neutral.
