In the USA, state registration numbers (e.g., OR-914-NG) must be at
least 3 inches high and in block sans-serif lettering (not script) and
are customarily placed at the bow. (I believe the requirement is that
they must be on the forward half of the hull or superstructure.) The
state registration sticker is placed next to the numbers, just aft of
them. This requirement is uniform among the various states of the USA.
In the USA, a federally documented boat displays its name and hailing
port at the stern, and the letters must be at least 4 inches high -
again, in block sans-serif font.
As you say, Norm, these requirements are not uniformly or reliably
enforced. But it's best to comply, so as not to give the cops an excuse
to write you up.
