I used the buzzer / horn from an old car alarm. Loud enough to wake the
whole neighborhood. If I were to leave the boat anchored for any great
length of time, I would find a boat nearby and tell them what to do if the
buzzer goes off while I am absent. And yes, a good pump / battery
combination will work for 10, 12 hours but then what happens??
I have a small automatic bilge pump to take care of normal situations of
rain etc, and a second float switch a bit higher for the alarm. My small
pump could run for three days .. never ever would it be that long .. the
small pump will take care of the problem or it wont. If it wont, then the
alarm comes on. Verbal permission to some skipper and his 'mate' to board my
boat and use the 2000gpm pump is, to me, preferable to keeping the boat
locked up with no-one having a key. The potential violation of my trust is
less important to me than the security I gain.
But then again I am a French Canadian and used to houses being left open in
the bush in case some traveller needs shelter. And the boat is insured :-)
