We just went through a lengthy process to bring our boat into TX State compliance. As of a year or so ago, regardless of Coast Guard documentation, we have to have Texas registration as well. As long as our Coast Guard documentation is kept current, we don't have to put those TX #s on the bow, just the registration sticker. The state wants their $$ each year.
It was a mess. We're about as far inland as you can get in Texas with a boat our size. The 36' Cheoy Lee was built in China and with no "hull number." First we had to have the boat inspected to prove there was no number, and then meet a game warden again to have a state serial number affixed to the hull. Getting various clerks and officials to agree on the process was our biggest hurdle.
Thankfully, the state grandfather'd in boats purchased at least four years before the law went into effect. All others had to produce bills of sale and pay sales tax.
Nevertheless, it may prove prudent for us to maintain our Texas registration as we head to the coast in a few years. That way, we can maintain our Texas residency and hopefully avoid having further taxes as we tour the East Coast.
Our boat name is on the transom (huge script) , with the hailing port in 4" letters.

Note that there are different state regulations for documented boats
in different states in the US. Some states (like TX) prohibit a boat
from having a state registration in addition to the federal
documentation, and some states (like MD) require both. In no case
that I know of are the registration numbers displayed on a documented
boat. So AFAIK, if you see a US boat with numbers on the bow that
means that it is not federally registered (documented)
