For boats displaying a registration number in the United States,
there's no requirement to even have a name. So the owner can do
whatever they want to about that as long as they display the numbers
in the way that the state requires. Usually that is on both sides of
the bow, at least that's what I've usually seen. But it is a state
    regulation, and not federal.

Note that there are different state regulations for documented boats
in different states in the US. Some states (like TX) prohibit a boat
from having a state registration in addition to the federal
documentation, and some states (like MD) require both. In no case
that I know of are the registration numbers displayed on a documented
boat. So AFAIK, if you see a US boat with numbers on the bow that
means that it is not federally registered (documented)

For the federal documentation (the equivalent of the Canadian
    registration), the regulations say that:

Pleasure vessels will have the name and hailing port of the vessel
marked together in durable markings in clearly legible letters not
less than four (4) inches in height on some clearly visible exterior
    part of the hull.

So that gives you pretty much the leeway to do what you want.

For U.S. Documented Vessels Operating as Un-inspected Passenger
    Vessels (Six Pack):
"If your vessel is documented, the name of the boat must be affixed to
the forward part of the hull (in the bow area) in 4-inch letters. In
addition, your vessel's name and hailing port or homeport must be
affixed on the stern in 4-inch letters."

It used to be that only block-type Arabic letters (i.e. no scripts)
were allowed but that no longer seems to be the case.

The regulation about the letters being 4:inches tall is not always
observed. For instance we have a scrolly bit on our stern and people
often put the boat name, and/or hailing port there, but it is only
    3inches.

We have used a script (which is now OK) which means that there are
both upper and lower case letters. We have chosen to interpret the
regulation to mean that the lower case letters must be 4 inches tall,
so the capitols are 6 or 8 inches tall. We've also decided that
although technically, we could put the name just on one side of the
bow, that we should have it on both sides of the bow and also on the
stern with the hailing port on the stern just as six packs are
    required to do..
