i have an inverter bank made of 8 golf cart batteries (4 pairs), protected
by a 300amp fuse as recomemded by xantrex. doesn't it mean i woudl need the
same protection on each pair if this theory is true? 4 300amp breakers not
    100?

sounds like a lot of things to go wrong, double the number of connections,
    etc...
