Check out knoppix, it's a bootable CD, that you can run without having
to install anything to the HD if you wish. <http://www.knoppix.net> It's
free of cost, and of course, free to duplicate and share. The nice thing
about a liveCD like this, is that you don't have to worry about messing
up your existing install of whatever, since it doesn't touch the
harddisk unless you want to. You can still save files, and settings, but
you aren't forced to . I carry a knoppix CD and a half gig USB
thumbdrive with me, which has my configs, and such, for email, etc. I
can run it on most any x86 machine.
there are a raft of other LiveCDs available, I'd recommend ubuntu
<http://www.ubuntulinux.org> also, it's is aimed at the refugees from
redmondware, and works rather well, it too is free of cost as well as
EULA restrictions. Again, you can copy and spread around the copies as
much as you like
There's a commercial distro called Linspire, <http:www.linspire.com>
which is sasd to work well for those used to MS-Windows, but I have
never used it and so cannot comment directly.
Start with Knoppix, or the Ubuntu LiveCD, heck, try them both, go from
there.
