Most the marina's in our area require boats to be moved out if the winds are
forecast to go over 60knots.
If you have a good solid mooring (not just one anchor) in a well picked site
your boat is safer there than in a marina, particularly in a hurricane. I've
ridden out a few hurricanes up to category 3 on our mooring with minimal
damage. When we leave the boat in hurricane season, we assume we'll get hit
and leave it prepared for one.
Of course there is more to it than just wind and wave, security is an issue
as well. Our mooring sits below 4 houses and I feel confident that they keep
an eye on the boats as theirs are moored there as well. A remote location
would have more security risk but less risk of being smacked by another boat
in a storm.
