I used sealant on one and butyl tape after that. The seal with the butyl
tape is MUCH better, and it is way easier to use.
For what it's worth, I accidently misaligned a port when putting it in. I
noticed it right away (5 minutes tops) so I removed the screws again, and
went inside. Then I pushed with ALL my strength against the port. It simply
would not budge. The Butyl really held the port in place. I was amazed at
it's strenghth.
I total I have now rebedded 10 ports and hatches...one with sealant and nine
with butyl tape. The one done with sealant leaks a little bit in heavy seas
or driving rain. The other nine are bone dry.
YMMV, but that was my experience.
