Must be the MS type made by Volvo.
It's a mechanical transmission, so called "velvet drive"
A broken axis inside, which decides when neutral or forward,
must be the reason.
You have to dismantle (by an experienced technician) the gear
and repair or buy a reconditioned one.
Try volvo-penta parts at internet. I have the MD11C with the same gear
and i replace it with a reconditioned one 6-7 years ago
