A Hurth transmission can fail just as you describe. Ours went out several
years ago while on a cruise: no forward, only reverse. In retrospect, we had
a few days warning; the engine RPMs increased a bit for a few seconds a
couple of times as the forward friction plates were giving out. I noticed
the increase in RPMs but couldn't explain it, until after the fact.
If this is the case on your boat, obviously no amount of cable adjustment
can compensate for it. The mechanic, (or your handy husband), will most
likely disconnect the prop shaft, tip the engine up and pull off the
transmission and send it in for a rebuild or exchange.
Mine went to Kalamazoo Marine Gear right here in Michigan, the whole job
took 2 weeks.
