what kind of transmission, engine, etc....
can you engage it manually using the lever on the transmission? you can often test that in your slip assuming your lines are adjusted correctly. it's possible that the cable moves the lever but not far enought.
did you check the fluid level? some trannies will not engage if fluid is too low, or will engage in rverse but not fwd. do you have a tranny pressure gauge at the helm? does the fluid smell burned?
hard to know without details on what you're dealing with.

I have a question about some potential transmission trouble. I lost forward momentum while returning to my dock one evening, resulting in a tow home. It has happened before and at that time it was a problem with the cable. My handy husband fixed the problem last time, but he is out of town so I am on my own. I researched the problem in several books and had the help of a friend to do the dirty work of adjusting the cable, filling the . We are both novices and thought we had the problem under control and wanted to celebrate with a sail, which ended in a tow home.
The first ten minutes was great, then I noticed a loss of propeller action. It felt like it was cavitating. Then we lost all forward movement. We still had reverse without any problems both times.
Today we fiddled with the cable with mixed results, sometimes we had full power, then none. Its possible that we did not adjust it properly, or the cable slipped. My friend tried moving the lever manually while the engine was running, reverse was fine, but nothing in forward. (I am not convinced that he did it right.)
My question is this. If I have a problem with the internal parts of the transmission, would it just fail altogether, or would it sometimes work and sometimes not? When it works, it works without a problem. Then the next time it does not engage although I see movement in the lever. What is your opinion, cable problem or transmission problem?
