Because somewhere I have a photo of my 50' mast lying on the roof of the
shed next door. The professional who was doing the job had brought the wrong
bottle screws, had damaged the old one, and had used an old halyard to
temporarily replace the stay. That halyard was not as stretchproof as one
might have wanted. French rigged, just two swept back stays + the headsail
roller furling track. The mast twisted and ka-boom. Actually more like
    KA-BOOM!!

He could have rented the crane next door for 2 hrs. It would have cost less
than the extra hours he charged for pussyfooting around with the backup
stays, and could have saved me a bundle in damages to adjacent property

No way would I do it again without a crane. That extra couple of hundred
bucks .. and the job is completed in a couple of hours. Do it when the boat
    is hauled for antifouling

    Peter
