Thanks to everyone who replied. Consensus seems to be
    1) the thermostat is located beneath the reservoir, hidden by the alternator.
    2) the missing impellor vane (found and removed from the heat exchanger)
indicates a likely cause is the impeller and/or the vane clogging the heat
exchanger. I think i tried running after removing the vane and it still
overheated, but i will repeat after:
    3) replacing the impellor is the best next step
    4) if that doesnt work (and replacing the thermostat) i'll take a look at
    the exhaust output for scaling/restriction

Thanks for all the help and great advice. I'm ordering parts today and
will probably work on it the wekend of the 22nd. If it goes well I'll be
heading the boat south that weekend, seeing how far i can get towards
    melbourne.

Sorry to those who tried to email me directly and got bounced. Our
anti-spam filter is pretty agressive about mal-configured emailers (you'd
be suprised what 'big name' ISPs are clueless) and we had dns 'issues'
late last week with our registrar.

    thanks again!
    jim
