I can't comment on sail drives and am not a diesel mechanic but think a
well cared-for diesel (regular oil changes, used regularly but not
over-revved or underloaded constantly) could easily provide excellent
service for many thousands of hours. My father-in-law got 12,000 hrs of
service out of his Perkins (with meticulous care). On the other hand, I
know of two engines (one Perkins, one Universal) that had to be
rebuilt/replaced at less than 5,000 hours because of disastrous exhaust
system failures.
And I completely agree with your DIY philosophy. If you have the time to
put into the job, patience, a modicum of experience with engines and things
mechanical, decent tools and a shop manual (or equiv source of tech data),
a good sense of when you're about to get in over your head, and the
inclination to pick the brains of the mechanics and machinists you run
across, you'll do fine and save a lot of money and learn an enormous amount.
Just my $.02. Cheers,
Phil
