I. I think the mixiing is done in the nozzle when using the spray-in type
dispenser.
2. Expansion amount varies greatly from almost none to three times or more.
Get to know the stuff you are using.
3. Very true. The foam can push things around. Also, be sure to mask off
any places that you do not want foam on. If you get some foam in the wrong
place wipe it off immediately with lacquer thinner. Once set, you must let it
cure completely then using mechanical means to remover, a-la sandpaper.
4. Absolutely true.
5. With experience, you will sometimes find yourself laying the foam in as
fast as it will come, and sometimes you will be feeding it slowly into a seam.
A major factor is setup and cleanup. Make the workplace easy to work in,
plenty of light and ventalation. Urethane foam is very sticky and will "travel"
all over if you don't take care to clean up every little bit of escaping goo
before it gets all over your hands and tools and everywhere they touch.
Once in place it is almost impossible to "tool". Let it set up, carve back
the excess, and apply again.
When doing insulation, especially the headliner, bear in mind that any
particle of matter inside your boat that will become cool enough to be below the dew
point, and has air touching it, will get wet. If it stays wet, mold and/or
fungus will grow.
The main purpose of the insulation is not so much to keep warm but, to
eliminate condensation (and subsequent corruption) inside your quarters.
