I was on many big ships during 27 years in the Merchant Marine. All steam
turbine ships had a reduction gear box. Some were also steam turbo electric
drive, with a reduction gearbox between the turbine and the generator. Several
were direct drive (propellor bolted to the crankshaft) diesel, one small tug
was diesel electric.
None had gear shifts to go from ahead to astern or stop.
I have a Hundested CP propellor on my boat. It is set up to go from feather
thru ahead thru neutral and some astern.
