Hi, Everybody!
I'm having an electrical problem aboard Candide that just started today
for no apparent reason. I'm still learning about electrical systems on
board, so forgive my ignorance. Here's the situation. The boat has a
Heart Interface inverter / charger, two battery banks (large house bank,
one starter battery on its own bank), and the boat is plugged in to
shore power (30 amp). Today, I noticed that the Heart Interface Remote
Panel was showing "Overcharge". I started to investigate, and here's
what I found out:
1. After resetting the inverter, the remote panel showed that the
system was drawing 60 DC Amps!!! I turned off EVERTHING DC-related at
the boat's electrical control panel. Still showed that it was drawing
60 DC Amps!!!
2. I turned OFF the house bank of batteries.and remote panel
dropped to a normal 10 DC Amps. If I turn ON the house banks, it
immediately climbs back to 60 DC Amps.
3. The house bank, turned off, shows 12 volts as expected.
4. The starter battery is showing 13.2 volts or so (which is normal
when it's charging)
So, obviously, I have a problem. What on earth could be drawing 60 amps
all of a sudden? Remember.I turned everything off at the control panel,
to no effect. It seems to me that there's a short somewhere.
If you agree with my assessment, how do I begin looking for the short?
Any suggestions are welcome!
Thanks!
