Brad,
My sailboat is located in Sea Gate Marina which is on the ICW half way
between the Neuse River/Pamlico Sound and the Newport River (Morehead
City/Beaufort). Unfortunately, I am still stuck in Bowling Green, Kentucky
for a little while longer.
The sailing around the New Bern/Oriental area is very good. There are many
coves and rivers in which to anchor. There are many interesting places to
see. People are very well atuned to marine activities and facilities are
rather good. Also, access to the Atlantic is relatively easy. Especially
with a shallow-draft vessel, you should find the area to your liking.
There are a lot of live-aboards around, and I hope to be one pretty soon.
But how welcome you were would probably depend on where you were docked or
moored.
There are several good hurricane holes around. Sea Gate Marina happens to
be one of the best as far as marinas go. My boat has weathered 8 hurricane
direct hits since I have owned her while docked at Sea Gate. I have
personally ridden out three hurricanes (exciting experiences). The marina
is inland enough to moderate the wind somewhat and there are wetlands and
bays between it and the ocean that slow down the surge. Also many people
arrange to have their boats hauled. Bock Marine, just south of Sea Gate
(and a very good DIY boat yard) pulls many boats every hurricane threat.
There is also a non-commercial hurricane hole just to the north on the ICW
called Cedar Creek. One disadvantage to the area is that it sticks out
into the Atlantic and gets hit most years by at least one hurricane,
sometimes several.
Hope this was helpful.
