lv-ab: revisit of phone cards

In prep for our upcoming voyage we've disconnected all of our land telephone
lines and have gone totally celluar.

Does anyone have any experience in using their cellphone in concert with a
phone card to call outside (for us that means the EU) the USA?

Specific phone card details would be appreciated.
