    What works for me is both.

    I do route planning for the GPS using computer charts, and have the paper
    charts (Chartbook) on the chart table in the wheelhouse when underway to follow
    our progress and confirm our positon.

    I started out using only paper, taking waypoints off with dividers and
    pencil/yellow pad, then entering data character by character on the Garmin 12.

    Using the computer electronic charts to do this is much easier, faster,
    eliminates transcription errors, and leaves a permenant file of every route which
    can be used again when travelling the same route (and shared with others),
    something we often do.
