    I do understand what you are talking about. You can't
    use gps to avoid nearby obstacles. I remember sailing
    on a 45' schooner through a narrow passage near Isle
    Au Haut off the Maine coast years ago, and there is
    ledge pretty far out from the bank, and just under the
    surface. We had a lookout up the mast and on both
    sides of the bow, and we crept along Very Slowly until
    we spotted the rocks and got past them. And that was
    with a skipper who knew where the rocks were anyway.

    You are quite right -- visual is the only way to go in
    some circumstances.
