What I was talking about is driving in the car, and
using gps and street map software. Most of the time
the gps is right on the money. When it's not, who
    cares?

Obviously if you are on the water in a boat, and there
is ledge a boathook away, then you would be a complete
idiot to try to rely on a gps to guide you. I can't
imagine that anyone would do that.

That said, if you are using a paper chart and taking
sights on things to try to determine your position,
you aren't going to do any better, and will probably
    do worse.

My question to you is this: What is YOUR insurance
guy going to say about your sailing along a boathook
distance away from rocks, trying to use a paper chart
and sights to avoid running into them? :-)

Personally I would sail somewhere where there weren't
rocks so close. I'm sure MY insurance guy would
    agree. :-))
