Last time I checked, you could get a pcmcia card for
your computer that talks to the T-Mobile network, and
have unlimited data with them for $20 month if you are
already a T-Mobile customer, or $30 if you aren't a
customer.
But that's at a theoretical 56Kb speed, which they say
is not much more than half that in reality.
Verizon and AT&T both have nice high speed capability,
again with pcmcia cards, like up to 2Mb in some cases,
and > 100Kb most of the time. But both these were
$80/month.
Also, if my AT&T cell phone with GSM-only capability
is any indication, GSM towers are few and far between,
so your coverage may be pretty thin.
