    thanks to everyone who has sent ideas and advice, many
    different PoV, very interesting. keep 'em coming!

    two more data points, I am neither a Can nor a US citizen so
    cannot do federal registration in either country, only
    licensing. I believe the boat qualifies as "used" due to her
    age, despite never having been sold before (purchasing from
    builder). considered registering offshore, Isle of Man or
    whatever, but that complicates the matter of keeping the
    vessel in US waters for the next few years as I would then
    need a US Cruising permit and I think would have to remove
    the boat from US territory periodically.

    I'll call various phone numbers and see what I can find
    out. am committed to the deal, so will have to make my
    way through the red tape as best I can. sometimes I think
    the real adventures with this boat will be *over* when I
    finally start sailing her :-)
