RE: lv-ab: Hurricane Frances - Marina or Anchored?

I did Hurricane Bob (1991) on my own anchors and the boat didn't move an
inch. I chose Hadley's Harbor across from Wood's Hole MA as my hurricane
hole. Winds were over 120 knots and I was on the "bad" side.

Subject: lv-ab: Hurricane Frances - Marina or Anchored?

    Hi, Everybody!

People at my marina are starting to get a bit freaked out over Frances, and
there was a big debate tonight over what to do. Personally, I think that my
boat will fair better if she's not at the marina should the storm hit our
area. Here are some facts about the situation:

    1. I live on board a heavy-displacement Hans Christian (28,000 lbs).

    2. I have 30 ft. of chain and 160 feet of rode on a bruce anchor and
200 ft. of chain on a CQR

    3. The boat is located 25+ miles from the Atlantic Ocean on the St.
Johns River just south of Jacksonville

    4. My section of the marina has floating docks

    5. The river is nearly 3 miles wide where the boat is docked, and
there is NO PROTECTION from winds from the east

Several miles south of here on the St. Johns is an area with a mud and clay
bottom. I'm thinking about anchoring Candide there, and leaving her. In
that area, both sides of the river are mangroves. My thinking is that
should she loose her holding, she'll be better off going into the mangroves
than she will be if she gets thrown up against concrete docks and pilings
    within the marina.

In either case (staying at the marina or anchoring out), if we take a direct
hit.I'm leaving the boat for my aunt's house several miles away.

So.what say the list? Stay at the marina or anchor out?

Please answer soon. I think that Sunday is D-Day for us. ;-)
