I thought with the snow bird migration starting, I would report Rental car
experiences. Having rented several one way rental cars recently, I find
things have changed from years past. Prices are up, averaging $90-$115/day.
National: Generally rents one way from airport and some local locations,
cheapest and does not "Sort" cars into local and "one way", therefore has
selection of cars avail. Downside: Rejects drivers licenses for 2 of any
problem, includes accidents not fault of driver. Bring another person with
credit card to rent the car. Charges $7/day for 2nd driver, even spouse.
Full size car is Impala, LeSabre or similar.
Avis: Rents one way from airports, with occasional exception from off
airport locations. Usually $20 more than National, does not charge for
extra drivers if spouse, has free membership to "Preferred" club. Not as
strict on drivers license rejects. "Sorts" cars into local/one way, smaller
locations may go get (1) car for you that can go one way, it often is
smaller than requested. Good office at Chesapeake VA, caters to boaters,
picks up from Great Bridge VA, overrides home office when they state that
there are no cars avail. Full size car is Malibu, Century, Vibe.
Hertz: Generally $40 more than National, therefore I have not used
recently, they will rent one way. Not as strict on licenses as National.
Enterprise: Rents one way only "Within district". Pushy with optional
insurance, requires that your auto ins co verify policy on phone (difficult
at odd hours). Bring proof of auto insurance or pay approx double
advertised rental rate to buy theirs. Mid size car is Sentra or Saturn.
Budget: May rent one way, but has few offices, unlikely to find 2 cities
that you need and they have.
With ALL brands: Advertised sales/specials are void for one way use.
