Update to an old message...
Some time ago I mentioned that I thought that the Garmin 12 GPS unit I use
would overwrite a waypoint lat/lon already in the unit with a new lat/lon if the
new waypoint has the same name as the one already in the unit without any
warning to the user.
I have just confirmed this to be true.
I normally store routes and associated waypoints as plain text scripts on my
laptop. When I want to travel a particular route, I upload the route and
associated waypoints into a Garmin 12 unit via a data cable.
If I should try to use a route previously uploaded into that particular unit,
and that route had a waypoint with the same name as a waypoint on a route
uploaded more recently, my old waypoint will have the lat/lon of the most
recently uploaded waypoint, not it's original, correct, lat/lon.
This doesn't happen often.
I name my waypoints by the first six digits of the latitude and most of our
travel is north/south so our latitude changes rapidly so I rarely have two
latitudes that are identical to six digits.
We normally upload each new route as we need it, so the changed waypoint
lat/lon would not be a problem unless we tried to use the route that had the first
instance of the same-named waypoint in it. This is something we seldom do.
Just something to be aware of...
