Robert,
Anchor out! S/V Truelove has been hit eight times by hurricanes since I
have been with her. Three of those times I was onboard, twice at my marina
and once on an anchor. But then, I am in one of the best hurricane holes
on the east coast since I am inland about 7 miles with lots of wetlands
between me and the ocean to absorb the surge.
If your marina had better protection, since you are upstream quite a ways,
it probably would be safe to stay at the marina (depending on the strength
of Frances when it comes ashore). But with no protection from winds out of
the east, the entire marina could be ripped apart.
One other point: The hurricanes that I have ridden out have all been about
category 1 or 2 by the time they hit me. E.g., Isabel's winds were 103 mph
at my boat. That was enough to heel my 32,000 lb steel boat about 20
degrees with bare poles and stretch the dock lines rather thin. If Isabel
had stayed a category 4 or 5 hurricane, I would have gone to Raleigh, NC,
waited for the hurricane to do its damage and then go try to pick up the
pieces. If Frances stays a category 4 hurricane, get as far away from it
as you can. A category 4 can cause extraordinary damage.
Good luck!!
