Leaving the Great LakesYou could consider traversing the New York Erie Canal. You need to remove masts for bridge clearance. Open dates are May 1-Nov 15, with some possible temporary closings, mostly for high water. It does get cold in October. See http://www.canals.state.ny.us/ It is very scenic and there are mostly free tie ups, so the cost is minimal. You exit the Hudson River to New York Harbor.

I live in Chicago and sail the great lakes. Like many I hope to live aboard and cruise when I retire. Those of us in the Lakes must plan a summer trip "out". Our choices are the Mississippi river, the lakes to the Erie canal, The lakes to the St Lawrence or trucking. I hope to go out the St. Lawrence.

I would leave in the early summer, say June and be in the gulf of St. Lawrence in the late summer - early fall. My question is how long can I dally through the lakes? How late in the year before I need to head south from Nova Scotia before it is too cold or too rough to be that far north (considering average tolerance for cold and weather)? This info would help to think through the planning of the trip.

      Thanks
