Bill Sellar,
My wife and I took our Crealock 37 sailboat from Detroit to Quebec City in June and July of 2001. We spent a week in Toronto, a week in the Thousand Islands, and a week in Montreal.
In 2002, we sailed from Quebec City to Baddeck, Nova Scotia with long stops at interesting places along the way. In the summer of 2003, we cruised the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia and hauled out at Bar Harbor, Maine.
We took our time during all of this and had great fun. You could make it from Detroit to Bar Harbor in one summer. We have friends who sailed from Detroit to Sydney, Nova Scotia this summer. They left in early June and arrived there at the end of August with many stops for leisurely shore tours.
As for how late in the year you can stay in Nova Scotia, I'll just say that we had good weather into early September. The Gulf Stream warms Nova Scotia with the side effect of fog. The temperature in winter in Halifax is not much different than Chicago.
Check with others for weather late in the fall and fog statistics...
