Excellent point, Sam. You just pointed out the real
problem here: A discussion about insurance, like a
discussion about abortion or religion or politics, is
based on a whole lot of "beliefs" or "faith", rather
than easily observable facts, which is what makes the
discussions so heated.
And which is what raises a red flag with me. Whenever
someone says, "Ya gotta have faith!", or "Take my word
for it!", or "It's the right thing to do!", or makes
adhominem attacks, my alarm bells go off.
It's a delightful if frustrating property of human
behavior that when someone questions a testable
observable scientific fact, everyone can come together
and have a peaceful logical objective discussion. But
when there is a difference of opinion over an
untestable matter of faith: look out!
