We revarnished the cabin sole this spring. I bought a Sears
belt sander and had at them. Since the top was a veneer, I
took extra care to keep the sander flat. Works well, but you
need to be careful. I also bought one of the belt cleaners
(looks like a huge gum eraser) and it did a super job of
getting the old varnish off the belt so I could use the
    belt longer.

    sole!

I stripped varnish from the cabin sole and refinished. My cabin sole is
veneer and obviously I had to be very careful.

I found scrapers at Home Depot that are actually made of wood, for use in
removing finishes on antiques and delicate wood.

The scrapers worked GREAT and in fact I was able to get a bit agressive with
a few tough spots too. I applied furniture stripper, waited the requisite
amount of time and it came off quite easily with the wooden scrapers. THen I
lightly sanded (really lightly) and finished.

    Hope this helps.
