Well, here is a subject to back away from the disagreements on insurance.
I am currently in the process of stripping my cabin sole of my sailboat to
bare wood and than applying Ultimate Sole.
I have taken several of the floorboards from the boat, and applied Peel
Away Marine Strip. It works okay, but is very time consuming and messy at
times.
You apply the paste to the floorboards, put over special paper, and within
6 to 24 hours you can lift up the paper which than in theory comes up with
all the varnish.
It comes up with about 80% of the varnish.
Once you remove the remaining 20% you need to nutralize the floor (because
of the stuff in the Peel Away) and wash the floor. That with drying takes
an additional 2 days. (Messy and time consuming)
This process worked very well on the floorboards I took from the boat. And
I have applied 4 coats of the basic Ultimate Sole and should start tonight
on the 1st of the 4 gloss coats.
So far the results are very impressive. The wood looks stellar with the
new varnish.
But I am not sure if I want to use this same procedure on the rest of the
sole of the boat. (A 44foot Norseman sailboat) It is very time consuming.
And it is hard to keep the paste away from the sides where it touches the
other woodwork on the boat.
The reason I used the Peel it Stuff was to see if I can do it without
damaging the wood with anything sharp to get the varnish off. (Scraping is
still required in places with the stuff, but I am using plastic scrapers)
I hear that using a heat gun with a stripper is something that works just
as well and will not result in scratched up wood.
Anyway, anybody have any recommendations on how to best strip the cabin
sole to bare wood?
Thanks,
Hank.
