I hear you, and I didn't weld, but I think the advice given to me was based
on the near-welding temperature of the exaust gas before the mixing elbow,
which could give the same problem when installed.

When welding galvanized pipe the zinc coating gives off a toxic gas as it
burns. I don't know how this applies to your plumbing. If you just joined it
together with threaded joints, it should not be a problem and if it was
"black" pipe then there was not galvanizing anyway.
