We found it very practical to load up the fridge with beer and cool it down using shore power. The beer would keep cold for about three days (no drinking before 5 PM). As you should run the diesel every couple of days or so, a one hour run every three days will be enough to recool the beer down to a nice frosty temperature.

The only concern was where to put the food until we discovered the canned goods section in the supermarket.

    Folks

I'm getting somewhat frustrated with this whole cooling issue. I have a
stock Whitby 42 fridge/freezer arrangement and the original mechanicals
are starting to fail. I am going to start ripping out the old within the
next 3 weeks but have no idea what to replace it with. I will replace
the old insulation with new and add a bunch more but I am still faced
with cooling a 8 cu ft fridge and a 5 cu ft freezer space. Keel cooling
is attractive but not powerful enough. I would like to go with a 12 volt
air/water solution but the US versions are way too expensive, Canadian
versions appear to be nonexistent. I am trying to stay with alternative
power generation (wind/solar) and not contribute to global warming by
running the engine but would like a cold beer once in a while... any
suggestions? I need something that will last beyond the guarantee period
and doesn't need more than 50 AH per day to keep it happy.
