Hi Gary,
Being a rock climber of many years who has recently become a sailor, I would recommend a bosum's chair over a rock climbing harness for the following reasons:
1) Everyone know how to sit in a chair. While tying into a harness and balancing off a single point where the halyard ties into the belay loop of the harness is easy, it isn't instinctive. You can easily end up sideways or upside down (I often walk down the mast upside down just to show off).
2) A bosun's chair should have pockets for tools, parts, etc. A climbing harness does not have pockets so you have to add them. A builders apron works well.
While a climbing harness is much cheaper than a bosun's chair, the few times I have needed one, there has always been one to borrow from the marina office or from a neighbouring boat.
Good luck with your decision.

Subject: lv-ab: Bosun Chair
Many posts back I believe it was mentioned that rock climber's equipment was better than a bosun's chair. Just wondering if anyone has more specifics on this. I am at the stage of outfitting my steel 36' pilothouse (finally) to launch in September. Also looking for an article on proper propane installation tips.
Thanks
