    Interesting that you should post this shortly after a lively discussion on
    another boatlist concerning the same subject.

    That discussion began with the observation of how well intentioned but
    misguided help from dockside helpers actually causes an accident involving
    quite a bit of damage to two boats.
    The overall conclusion was that most people on the dock do not know or
    realize what the skipper intends and consequently fail to do the right
    thing. Worst case scenario they also cause damage to boats and sometimee
    people.
    For that reason the consensus was they would prefer not to have help unless
    they specifically ask for it.
