The key sentence in that article that makes it pretty pointless is:
"If you are assuming that most of these reports are generated by
worms that attempt to propagate, an unpatched system would be infected
by such a probe,"
Anyone who has done any analysis of the probes that hit their firewall
on a regular basis will quickly find that they are not coming from worms
attempting to propagate but are coming from automatic scanning tools
used by crackers. The crackers come back much later (sometimes days
later) to see if they can actually get into the system.
The only time I saw anywhere near a realtime attack was during an
outbreak of a virus that actually took advantage of the exploit
(typically 1 to 2 a year).
AND, if you have your virus scanner installed before you connect to the
Internet, it will catch the viruses as they try to infect the machine
and stop them. Also, most ISPs block inbound connections to the
Microsoft file sharing ports (which are what most of these viruses are
trying to get to. The only other popular attack method is against the MS
IIS server (web server) which is not enable on a default install of any
MS product that you are likely to find on a home PC.
