I have a Toshib that I think a lot of since it was the only thing not fried
by the lightning hit, although the internal modem was turned into molten
sprayed copper. They fixed for free.

I agree it need not be all that fast or fancy, but a DVD player is nice for
movies, and USB ports are also a must nowdays.

As for power, there are very efficient (90 some odd %) and cheap switch mode
DC-DC converters that work just fine.
Get the MS Office XP, if you are like me and want the spell checker ect.
Otherwise MS Home XP is fine.

A wireless mouse lets you run a remote dsiplay and 'hide' the laptop from
spray as long as it has ventilation. Ext. speakers make the CD music sound
    real nice.

I think I would buy from ebay if I was wanting one just for the boat...just
look around for awhile to make sure the $ are right.-Ken
