the 90 deg approach is very popular, mostly with small boats down here... I never figured out why... maybe because its how they park their cars at the mall :-) a few months ago, I saw some guys trying to dock a 30 something Doral express in a 50' gap by attempting to paralel park the boat just like a car... starting next to the boat in front and backing up... just like a car. it didn't work of course but it was real funny to watch...
how about life jackets used as fenders? pretty common too....

PS, The Admiral has just assisted a group of 4 drunken male boaters tie up to the dock. They came in with no running lights on, 3 hours after dark, having gone out some 4 hours ago while the sun was going down. Approached the dock at 90 degrees, bumped the bow on the bullrail, no lines ready, and really almost no idea where they were! These guys will only learn by fatality, and even then it "won't be their fault". Stupid.
