What about the pressurized pre-oilers such as Accusump used in
automobiles? Not only do they pre-oil but also supply oil in case of
oil pump failure.
I don't think it would do much good in the case of a catastrophic oil loss
because whatever cause the sudden loss of all oil would make short work of the
supply in the Accusump.
Loss of oil pressure will show up quickly in the gauges and alarms usually
found on main engines. If it is because of an extraordinary leak, the leak must
be fix before one can proceed. If the problem is an oil pump failure, then
the Accusump is useless after it delivers it's reserve, but the pre-start pump
could be turned on to supply oil to the galleries as long as there is
electricity and oil in the sump.
