Hi, Lee!
A couple of years ago, I redid the soles of Candide. It's a fairly
simple task, though laborious. First step was to use a heat gun and
scraper (a piece of windowpane glass works best) to remove the old
varnish. Then, sand, sand, sand. Vacuum all the dust away, and then
rub everything down with mineral spirits.
I used Z*Spar's Captain's Varnish
(http://www.petitprod.com/HandProd.asp?SubCatID=4) and have been
exceptionally happy with it. It provides a very bright surface and has
held up extremely well. It's expensive (about $25 per quart), but looks
great.
As for traction...well, varnishing isn't going to help...

I would like recommendations for material to re varnish my pilot house
floor, it is Teak & Holly plywood. The current 1984 varnish is in poor
shape with chips that have expanding water stains. I will sand all the
old
finish off, will I need a chemical to help remove the water stains? Do
any
finishes provide better traction, without adding grit?
