In regard to Lockwood's Folly, here's an excerpt from my log on the way
down:
Today’s adventure was the dreaded Lockwood’s Folly inlet at mile marker 321,
which was rumored to have shoaled to 3’ at low tide. Curmudgeon draws 4 ˝
feet. I calculated our arrival at 1257 which was -00.3 on the tide
table—four inches below “low tide” due to the nearly full moon. It doesn’t
get much worse than that! I passed a sailboat just before the Folly and
asked him how much water he needed. He said he drew 6’. I told him to
follow me and keep his fingers crossed! When we got to the inlet, a
sailboat was aground in the channel and a small trawler was turning to try
and pull him off. Many sailboats decided to wait for mid tide and took the
opportunity to refuel and stop in at marinas on the way.
My strategy is to use the channel markers as “advice”, but make the course
decision by looking at the color of the water and the wave patterns. I
followed what I felt was the “deep” water” and never saw anything less than
5 ˝” of water. The sailboat followed my wake precisely and made it through
too, although I saw him bump in the process. High tide at 2000 was an
additional 5.2 feet. Clearly Lockwood’s Folly is worthy of “special
handling”, but it’s a long way from being impassable IMHO.
